The School follows the English Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for Sunbeams and IY1. In IY2-IY7 the school follows the English National Curriculum and the Ontario Curriculum. Early Years assessments, Y1 phonics checks, KS1 and KS2 SATs tests are all administered in accordance with regulations from the Department for Education to assess pupil progress and attainment.


As a School we seek to enrich and make the curriculum personalized and bespoke in a number of different ways. We use the school’s location to provide real-life learning experiences. An example of this is our IY7 pupils study WW1 and to support this they visit Arnhem; as a result, their learning becomes very real and meaningful.

The international context of the school

Our core values and character education permeate across the curriculum as we teach children the skills required to learn effectively throughout life and instil virtues associated with developing character.

We have a generous staff to pupil ratio as we are funded by the Ministry of Defence. Class sizes are on average approximately 20 in a class and each class also has a Learning Support Assistant.  This helps us to successfully assist children with their smooth transition in and out of school. On arrival, teachers are experienced at assessing children quickly. This enables us to identify gaps in learning and target these to ensure that all pupils make rapid and sustained progress from their individual starting points. Effective differentiation to meet the needs of all children is also helped by the high staff to pupil ratio. We challenge our most able pupils through rich learning experiences which encourage breadth, depth and application of knowledge, skills and understanding across the curriculum. We also employ specialist teaching staff to teach French/German or English in all year groups, PE, Music, Art, Host Nation and Forest School.  Special educational needs support is provided by a dedicated team.

The curriculum is broken down into terms for each year group and information is provided for parents on Curriculum statements issued to parents at each reporting period. The Letter and Sounds Phonic scheme is used and is supported by  a variety of different reading schemes (Oxford Reading Tree, Phonic Bugs, Raz Kids etc) to further promote breadth and depth in our curriculum offer.
